Your Quick Summer Outdoor Checklist

Here in Colorado, summer is heating up fast! Even though June just started, we’re already seeing temperatures in the 90’s. With the temperature rising quickly, you may be wondering how to keep your lawn and gardens in great shape. Here are some simple ways to make sure your lawn (and the rest of your home!) beats the heat.

Keep your lawn green

  • Don’t cut your grass too low - longer roots help your lawn retain moisture. All you have to do is make a quick adjustment to your lawn mower to give your grass a boost.

  • Water early in the morning to prevent evaporation once the temperature goes up.

  • Keep feeding your lawn in the summer! A well-fed lawn looks healthier and holds more water, so your grass will be the envy of the neighborhood!

Give your garden a hand

  • Similar to your lawn, it’s best to water your gardens and plants early in the morning to prevent the water from evaporating. Drip irrigation systems can be a great way to keep your garden healthy in the heat.

  • Don’t forget to mulch - this important step helps to reduce stress on your plants by locking in moisture.

  • Give your plants some shade! If it looks like your plants are starting to wilt in the sun, bring over an umbrella or a sheet to give your plants a break.

  • Consider using lighter-colored containers for plants, as dark containers can sometimes hold more heat.

Don’t forget the general maintenance!

  • It’s always smart to get a tune-up on your air conditioner, swamp cooler, or attic fan before the summer really gets hot. But it’s never too late! If you think your systems aren’t working as efficiently as they could be, then call in an expert to check them out.

  • It’s never a bad idea to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors - experts recommend testing those on a monthly basis. While you’re at it, change your furnace filters too!

  • Take a walk around your home and inspect the foundation for any cracks or problem areas.

  • How’s your garage door? It might be in need of some TLC if you notice any squeaking or issues when it opens and closes.

  • Clean out your gutters and make sure downspouts are functioning properly.

  • Clean out your dryer hose and vent to prevent any clogs or potential fire hazards.

Wash down your windows and deck

  • Wash your windows, inside and out, and wash your screens to clean off any springtime pollen or dust that’s still hanging on.

  • Power wash the deck and front porch - it’s a great time to see if you have any deck boards that need to be replaced too.
