Tips for Setting Goals in the New Year

Hello, 2022! So many of us are excited about the possibilities of a new year. It’s easy to focus on resolutions, but about 80% of resolutions fail by February (according to Forbes). That’s why I like to set goals instead of resolutions! Instead of putting pressure on yourself to have the perfect resolution, there are ways to focus on attainable goals that you can keep up with throughout the year.

By the way - is buying or selling a home on your list of goals for 2022? Rarely do we see a market so beneficial for both buyers and sellers, so if you’re thinking about a real estate transaction, we should talk! Inventory in the Denver metro area is very low, which means sellers have amazing opportunities if they put their home on the market. We are also seeing historically low mortgage rates, so buyers can realize a financial benefit if they decide to buy.

There’s no “right number” of goals - just think about what’s best for you

Don’t get hung up on the number of goals you have for 2022, just outline what’s most important to you personally and professionally. You can also choose a mix of both short- and long-term goals so that you can enjoy successes throughout the year.

Write down your goals somewhere visible, whether it’s in a notebook you use regularly, a white board in your office space, or a document on your desktop. Really put some time into outlining the steps you need to take to make your goals a reality. For example, if you want to reach a sales milestone, what specific things will you do to drive success in that area? Think of it as a to-do list for each goal. This can help your goals feel more accessible, since you’ll create a clear pathway to achieving them.

Set up an accountability system for your yearly goals

Even if you’re self-motivated, it doesn’t hurt to have someone or something to hold you accountable for your progress. You can reach out to a mentor, friend, or family member and have a quick chat about your goals, and ask them to check in on you from time to time. If you’d prefer to keep your goals personal, you can set calendar reminders throughout the year with notes about where you hope to be on the path to your goal.

Adjust your goals throughout the year

If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s the value of flexibility. We’ve all had to change our personal lives, businesses, and social lives to accommodate a challenging year. Who knows what 2022 will bring? If you realize halfway through the year that one of your goals isn’t relevant or it’s causing you undue stress, make a change. These are your goals - you get to decide what works and what doesn’t!

Celebrate your successes

Even if you reach a small milestone on one of your goals, take a moment to celebrate yourself! Who doesn’t love adding some positive energy to their day? You could also start a gratitude journal for a continuous reminder about how far you’ve come and all the things you appreciate in your life. For a quick and easy way to get started with a gratitude journal, check out these steps.

With 2022 just beginning, now is the perfect time to set up the habits that will make your goals a reality. Add in some determination, accountability, and gratitude, and you can set yourself up for a year of success. I’m wishing you all the best as we head into the new year!
