House Items to Check After a Winter Storm

Red house with snowy trees

The Front Range was hit with one of our classic spring snowstorms this weekend! Although warmer weather is just around the corner, we aren’t out of the woods yet when it comes to strong winter storms. While preparing for the storm is on the top of everyone’s minds (the crowded grocery stores were one indication!), it’s easy to forget a few to-do items after the storm is over.

While it’s fun to cozy up and enjoy the beautiful snow, there are a few house-related things you should keep an eye on when the snow starts piling up.

Watch for loose branches on your trees

Heavy, wet snow can easily cause branches to break. Not only is this damaging to your trees, but it’s also a safety hazard. If it’s safe to do so during the snow, try to brush snow off your branches to keep the snow from weighing them down. After the snow is over, inspect your trees for any loose or broken branches. If it’s not easy to reach the branches that need to come down, you may need to call a professional arborist.

Check carbon monoxide and smoke detector batteries

This is one task you should be doing every month, but a big storm is a great reminder to make sure these are functioning properly. Many people use space heaters or other heating methods (especially if the power goes down), and this can easily become a carbon monoxide issue or fire hazard. Since carbon monoxide doesn’t have a smell, it’s difficult to detect and can easily become life-threatening.

Start clearing snow as soon as you can

Once it’s safe to go outside, it’s smart to start clearing snow from your walkways, driveways, and sidewalks. As the snow accumulates and settles in, it becomes more difficult to clear. Give your back a break - shovel early when the snow is lighter.

Restock emergency supplies

How’s your stock of batteries, food essentials, snow supplies? If you used these items during the storm, it’s smart to restock before you forget. Ready.gov has a comprehensive checklist with your guide to preparing for winter weather.

Check for frozen pipes

Frozen pipes are a huge headache, so if the temperature drops, keep an eye on the plumbing around your home. If you think your pipes may have frozen or burst, call a plumber as soon as possible to get repairs underway. As the snow starts melting, check for any potential floods or water leakage into your home too.

I hope you are staying safe and warm at home! If you’ve spent your time inside searching for your dream home, reach out to me at 8Z Real Estate. I’m always happy to have a conversation about your home goals - no matter the weather!
