Summer is in full swing - temperatures are rising, and your utility bills might be rising too! Even when the weather is hot, you can keep your cool with some easy and energy-efficient tips to keep your home comfortable.

#1. Use your appliances strategically

Did you know that your washer, dryer, and dishwasher generate a lot of heat? Keep your appliances running efficiently by running full loads (instead of multiple, smaller loads), and using the cold water setting. You can also forgo the dryer altogether and simply hang up your clothes to dry.

While you’re reviewing your water usage - when was the last time you checked the temperature on your water heater? The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping your water heater at 120 degrees.

#2. Shut your blinds

A simple thing like keeping your blinds closed can help keep your house cool when the weather heats up. You can find blackout curtains in almost any color to keep your interiors looking stylish and energy-efficient! Once it cools down, open up your blinds and windows to let in some of that great evening air!

#3. Replace your air filter

If you have an air conditioner, when was the last time you changed the filter? It’s easy to buy filters in bulk so you always have them on hand. Experts recommend changing them every month or two months to keep your HVAC system running smoothly.

You can also do a quick audit of air vents in your home - are there any you can close so air can be directed elsewhere? In addition, you can make sure any vents you want to use are unblocked and free to circulate air.

#4. Check your ceiling fan settings

Did you know that many ceiling fans have two settings - one for summer and one for winter? Make the most out of your ceiling fan by checking which setting you have it turned to. In the summertime, your fan blades should rotate counter-clockwise in order to properly circulate cool air. Learn more here!

#5. Update your landscaping

If it works for your home, you could add shade-producing trees and landscaping to help your home stay cool in the summer. Not only does it add great curb appeal to your property, it also helps your home maintain a comfortable temperature.
