3 Creative and COVID-Safe Winter Activities in Colorado

Union station in Denver, Colorado

This holiday season is undoubtedly different from other years, and it’s important to take COVID-19 precautions to stay safe and healthy. While some holiday traditions might have to be put on pause this year, you still have many options when it comes to outdoor winter activities. Who knows - you may even start a new tradition this year.

Stroll through the Denver Christkindl Market

A staple in the Denver holiday scene, the Christkindl Market is a fun and festive way to experience German Christmas traditions, sample great food, and find unique gifts for friends and family. The event is being held at Civic Center Park this year to allow for more social distancing and masks are required at all times. Take a walk through the market, enjoy a pretzel, and savor the spirit of the season until December 23!

Find creative outdoor dining options

Dining outside in winter? It’s possible! Maybe you’ll get lucky and enjoy one of those beautiful, sunny Colorado winter days, but you still have options even if the weather isn’t in your favor. The town of Telluride is converting refurbished gondola cars into dining spaces so people can enjoy dining out - outside. The gondola cars even have heating and ventilation systems, so you can eat at altitude while staying comfortable and warm.

Check out the Mile High Tree

The Mile High Tree is a spectacular light installation in downtown Denver that is the largest of its kind in North America. You’ll also enjoy holiday music along with the light display on a 110-foot-tall art installation, so it’s a perfect outing for the whole family. The program runs for about five minutes and cycles every 15 minutes, so you have plenty of opportunities to catch the show. No more than five people are allowed at a time, social distancing measures are in place, and masks are required.

Host a virtual dinner party with takeout from a local restaurant

We are all missing those fantastic dinners out and happy hours with friends and family. Why not take a night to support a local restaurant and catch up with friends too? You and some friends could order takeout and hop on a video call to enjoy delicious food and even better company. So many local restaurants in our community could use a boost (and you could use the night off from dishes too)!

2020 has delivered unimaginable challenges and difficulties, and this holiday season looks so different from the ones we know and love. However, there are ways to make memories while staying safe and careful. With many businesses and restaurants still struggling to cope with the effects of COVID-19, we all have a great opportunity to support our community and make this holiday season meaningful and memorable.
